Dove House Colour Run 2016

Over the weekend I was involved in something pretty amazing and certainly different from everyday activities.

Dove House Hospice Colour Run took its place at Hymers College on Saturday. The event for the third year brought together fantastic people in urge to help and support Dove House Hospice.

The reason why I found myself covered in rainbow paint was my long-thought idea of running and photographing at the same time. I geared up with GoPro Hero, rather than carry the bulky Mark III, so I filmed as well as photographed. For the Colour Run I couldn’t really decide which way to go – run or photograph from the viewers point of view…and I think my decision to do both has got some success.

As just recently I have started volunteering for Dove House Hospice and start my End Of Life Celebrations project with them, I had the opportunity to bring the ideas forward to Fundraising team and they showed 100% support.

They loved the idea to have the Colour Run reflected from artists point of view within the actual run.

The GoPro Hero was an adorable little camera that took some shots from right of the middle of the action. I also filmed a lot whilst running, stopping for a close up action near the paint stations.

I have never used GoPro before and I wish I was. I have looked through the footage and the actual parts where I run are just…funny to say…a bit of a fail. Camera is jumping up and down with me and just doesn’t look right. But everything is a learning curve and I will master Adobe Pro and get a lovely short video from the footage I have.

Overall – really exciting event, brings different people together for one cause. The paint, sweat, water, smiles and fresh air literally made my day.

Freedom Festival 2016

Time has passed since the Freedom Festival, but it is never too late to share some great moments and re live the festival.

WARNING – there is nearly 200 photos, so before you decide to open the gallery and re live the festival, prepare a cup of tea and a bowl of biscuits.

I will keep the the reading to the minimum, so that you have the chance to indulge in the moments.

Massive thanks to Freedom Festival for trusting me with this big and important job, it was my honour to be the official photographer amongst great talent, such as Thomas Arran and Neil Holmes.

I was photographing the festival across three days – performances, music, theatre, people and moments.

My highlight was definitely Les Commandos Percu and Deabru Beltzak Danbor Talka: Clash of Drums on Friday night and Saturday daytime, when everyone embraced the rain and enjoyed the festival.

Looking back at the photographs, especially from the night time – the festival has been a learning curve and I have so much space where to develop.

I have recognised a strong Parr and Dench influence when I look at people and moments through the lens. I am drawn to human kind being awkward at times, honest, happy, beautiful, clumsy, innocent and guilty…I celebrate people.

The Freedom Festival this year has been incredible – it was distributed well across very significant and beautiful areas of Hull, it had wide range of art available to different kind of people and it was engaging.
I certainly feel like I was part of something really good, something that is so “Hull”.

I hope you enjoyed the festival and are ready for next year- 10th anniversary of Freedom Festival.

Hull Comedy Festival>>Sunday Funday @St.Stephens

As mentioned before Hull Comedy Festival 2016 is coming soon, so on Sunday they did a little promotion in St. Stephens as part of the Super Sunday Fundays they entertained kids and grownups too..

Must say – I got little too much involved and cheered alongside the kids to the magic tricks performed by Michael Diamond’s.

Plus he had incredible skills in managing scary balloons….

Gary Jennison was there to make sure things are looking good, everyone gets involved and was blowing up HHCP balloons.. [oh might duck…]

GIGGLES LIVE @KARDOMAH94

Every now and then I feel the urge to attend a comedy gig hosted, presented and performed by my comedy friends.

Also Hull Comedy Festival 2016 is fast approaching and preparations are taking place more often.

Last Thursday I went down to Giggles Live Presents event at Kardomah94.

The event was hosted by famous and hilarious Jed Salisbury and performances from Jack Gleadow, Dave Rivers, Jack Hammer and Odd Sock Club, Gary Jennison Gameshow.

Well, I had a laugh an the audience did too [it was packed full and I could not find a seat]

These guys have so much talent, dedication and it is always my pleasure to be around them.

Erm, the photos are really just 1/2 professional as my aim was to enjoy myself.

HULL STRUM @NORTH POINT SHOPPING CENTRE>>FREEDOM FESTIVAL 2016

Last week I was asked to photograph an event that is part of Freedom Festival’s 2016 programme and aims to encourage and educate people from outskirts of Hull to get to know Freedom Festival.
Bransholme is one of the areas of Hull that love to “stay in” and we brought a little taster of Freedom Festival to the North Point Shopping Centre to giving people the opportunity to find out about the festival and potentially visit Hull centre in September.

I do believe in the idea of bringing all communities together and share the experiences in order to celebrate Hull’s people – we are great. Therefore I was super keen to get involved and really – get to know Bransholme.

Hull Strum is an art installation that invites people to pick up a guitar or ukulele and have a strum – it does not matter if you’ve never had one in your hand. Across Freedom Festival there will be around eight stages made out of upright boats and a little stage for people to express themselves.

Also, as part of the two day event, Freedom Festival organised AWESOME face painter. The super talented lady attracted many kids and made them look “out of this world-ace”

Both days we also had a “proper” musician Ryan Mathie, a local chap that once went on X Factor to represent the talent of Hull.
He performed for 40 min both days, inviting people to gather around and be inspired.
The most precious moments in both days we withnessed when kids joined Ryan on stage and tried playing the guitar/ukulele as brilliantly as Ryan did.

Friday

Friday was quite busy and we met a lot of great people, spread the word about the festival, entertained kids, got some faces painted and sprung some strings.

Saturday

Saturday was not as busy in the early part of the event, as there was quite a lot of family friendly activities in Hull. The positive side of Saturday was that we introduced quite a lot of curious people, those who potentially will come and bring the family with them.
Of course, there was smiles, painted faces, strum and string, laughs and good spirit.

We think we did a good job. We are hoping that people will be keen and curious to see what the Freedom Festival can offer and will join us on from the 2.- 4. September.

“BEFORE I DIE” WALL @HULL PRIDE, 2016

On the 16th of July more than one amazing things took place.
THE HULL PRIDE was planned to be the biggest in Hull so far, second BEFORE I DIE WALL was set up by Eskimosoup and I was going to my annual summer visit to Latvia.
It was an outrageous day, as I had to be up early to help and photograph for setting up the wall, edit and blog the photographs from the morning activities, pack suitcases and tidy my house and never the less – photograph the THE HULL PRIDE and BEFORE I DIE WALL …… I thought I did bloody well, because at the end I actually did not miss my plane and was alive.

First – apologise for making promises I can’t keep. When I arrived in Latvia, on the first few days I could not find software and the rest is history…

I am not worried, because events like THE HULL PRIDEand BEFORE I DIE WALL has left a legacy and the point made will last for a long time.

THE HULL PRIDE was inspiring and I had a smile on my face at all times. The pride really represented freedom, diversity and good spirit. People looked ever so happy and proud to be part of the movement.

I followed the parade from Queens Gardens to stage area near Fuel. The wall was suited in the pride “party” area and as soon as the parade finished, I was rushing down to see what has happened to the wall…

Already before the party started, the wall was full of people’s thoughts about what would they wish to do before they die.
It was a beautiful view, I was so proud of the fact that Eskimosoup and I have done a great job and got people involved.

Sometimes we need a platform of a strange kind to say what we can’t say to anyone else. Do we dare to think about our lives in these terms and consider the fact that one day we all pass away.

Different kinds of people got involved, the wall was popular and the messages were inspiring.

If we take in account that 95% of the messages are genuine and people truly mean what they write, we can see what is on societies mind….. A lot of travelling requests, political wishes and little life goals..

The image above seems quite strange, as the film industry often associate God or Jesus as those that can fulfill our wishes, but actually it is the people’s dedication, motivation and hard work that will make these writings a reality.

As I was leaving half way, the wall continued to blossom during the event and I hope people enjoyed to be part of this.

BEFORE I DIE WALL AT HULL PRIDE

WHAT AN EXCITING DAY TODAY FOR BEFORE I DIE WALL AT THE HULL PRIDE.

Early [and I mean early] this morning me and Jenni from Eskimosoup went down Baker Street, next to Fuel to set up our Before I Die Wall in Hull.

Jenni has worked hard this week to create the BEFORE I DIE WALL by painting boards and cutting stencils.
The wall is looking better than ever and has found a great location.

Thank you to Jenni’s dad who drove the wall there and was very handy to help getting the boards to the wall.

This will be the second BEFORE I DIE WALL in Hull, few months ago we did a trial wall at the YO YO Festival and it was great success.

Today we are looking to encourage people to share they thoughts and write on the wall, reaching different kind of people attending the HULL PRIDE.

FOR THE LOVE OF LIFE: PRESENT AND FUTURE PLANS

I sack off tomorrow. I am going to Latvia, my home and heart. Before I leave everyone for 2 1/2 weeks, I would like to give a quick update of what has been going on, what I will be up to for two weeks and what are my future plans.

For the past month I have been living a post-student life and so many great things have happened. I have left the student-hood and got my life back. Suddenly I can absorb the world around me. The seasons have changed from autumn to winter, to spring and yes, July have arrived quickly.

First great and awesome thing – the hard work over three years have summed up in First Class Honours and yesterday in the post I got the actual scores, so it is not just a mistake. I am super happy.

After the Degree show, I presented “End Of Life” celebration project at Manchester Hothouse Redeye event,photographed Hull 10K, been to Jazz Comedy Night in Hull, become an official volunteer at the Dove House Hospice and have got some pretty amazing photography jobs…. a lot has happened.

Starting in August I will start working even harder and have so many plans.

First – I will release wedding, engagement, family photo shoot and pet photo shoot packages. I have to start make some money out of this fantastic talent I have [education too hehe] and I have to be open minded.

I will continue to photograph as volunteer at different kind of events to celebrate life and people, because that is who I am and hopefully will have enough time to explore the world through the lens.

Currently working on collaborating with Freedom Festival and pre-festival events, will be at the Humber Street Sesh in August, will continue working with Eskimosoup and hopefully will officially become a freelance photographer.

Most important – “End Of Life” project is on the top of the list.
I am currently pausing the grave yard and funeral part, but will be working towards celebrating end of life in work collaboration with Dove House Hospice and explore people that either have a life limiting illness or experience someone else having life limiting illness. I will be looking at celebrating life lived, legacy left behind and other great things that we can think of in the means of life. I will be speaking with people, sharing my views and project and really want to open up this difficult subject of death and end of life to a broader spectrum of people.

Although I say I have paused the funeral and cemetery photography, I will be photograph and explore the core of the project – cultural differences between Latvian and British.

For the first time, my time in Latvia is not going to be just about leisure and taking holiday snaps. As the origins of “End Of Life” project comes directly from my Latvian heritage, I feel the urge to work on the project whilst there and bring back my vision of the subject of death and how open-minded [or not] Latvians and Eastern cultures are.
Whilst visiting Latvia I have selection of photographs that are defining visual of death and end of life subject in British culture and will recreate them in Latvia.
I also hope to have a quick visit to at least one grave yards in Lithuania and Estonia.

Plus, I have an ambitious plan to contact and visit Riga Eastern Clinical University Hospital Pathology Centre slash morgue and embrace the darkest part of end of life.

My professional life relies on WordPress blog, Facebook page. I feel like I need to reconstruct my blog and have an additional online portfolio.

As you may have noticed, my Facebook page is fairly new – still working on it.

Whilst I will be in Latvia, I will continue organically extend my “HOME GLORY” ongoing series and will create master pieces that are truly and utterly my kind of Latvian.

There is that one last thing I will be doing on the day before I fly off – Before I Die Wall @Hull Pride tomorrow from 1 pm.

I will be there early to photograph setting up and you might see those photos as early as 9 am and later on the day I will be at the Hull Pride.

HHCP HULL BIG HANG AND SLEEP OUT.

On Saturday [yes, a week ago, I’ve been pre-holiday busy] I went down to Queens Gardens to photograph [absorb] the event that Hull Homeless Community Project have organised.

The page on Facebook states: “Join us for a night under the stars in Queens gardens in support of those who have no choice.”

I believer in humanity and was super keen to go and give my kind of support – photograph people and reflect the humanity and diversity. I was not planning to stay for the whole night [make my monies worth by staying in the house that I pay rent for ha], but I thought in couple of hours I could find what I am looking for.

Also a shout-out to my favourite comedians Jack Gleadow and Jed Salisbury who were there to support the cause with the comedy and their presence.
Both of those guys are super awesome and there is not a dull day, if they are around.

In every photo-opportunity I try to find that one special moment, that peak of how wonderful it is to be alive and never the less – different. We are all looking for that extraordinary in ordinary and that for most of the time is my goal.

The photographs are reflecting different people coming together to support those who need help. Homeless doesn’t mean less valuable to the society and humanity, we never know what is the story behind and shouldn’t judge so we need to keep ourselves open-minded and give support.

If honest, even though the attendance and “sleepers” didn’t fill Queens gardens, it was enough to feel the great atmosphere.

And I have come home with beautiful photographs of beautiful people – is there more to ask?

These pictures are taken between 7 -21:30 pm, so reflect only small part of the event and I feel that some images need commentary, so please, enjoy and remember – be kind, helpful and love life.

A [point of] view of Manchester

First visit to Manchester alongside Redeye Hothouse.

Before the event I walked around the area, not even sure what is the name of it, so can’t tell you much. But ohh-what a place!

As the day began, it was fairly empty and quiet. The first impression – few lads just woken up from a busy night out, stinky breeze of “morning after” breath and sick behind the lamp post.
Ahh, the perks of Saturday morning….

The area though-lovely, lots of urban views and derelict buildings sharing the space between pubs, clubs, cafes and studios.

Few homeless people about [don’t really see much in Hull] and group of polish locals setting up a boozy breakfast next to the park “thing”
