MY CITY OF CULTURE – MY HULL – WEEK 47

ON THE WEEK WHEN I WAS LOOSING THE PLOT COS BUSY…

SERIOUSLY SCRAPING FOR CULTURE THIS WEEK, WHY? YEAR IS COMING TO A CLOSE AND THINGS REALLY SLOWING DOWN?!

LIST FOR THIS WEEK:

I was in town, I went back to the WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE? by JASON BRUGES STUDIO  to get a better angle, because these giant mystery units might change or disappear in next few days.

_Z1A6025WEEK 47 b_Z1A6027WEEK 47 b

I can’t wait until they reveal the “magic”.

The same day I was a witness to the preparations to CHRISTMAS LIGHT SWITCH ON PREP which is a massive attraction to everyone in Hull. the word Christmas now is on everyone’s vocabulary and of course the event is expected to be AMAZING, cos Hull 17.

_Z1A6040WEEK 47 b

I loved how taken from a specific angle, I was able to imagine that Ferens Art Gallery is moved to rich and green woodlands.

Event organisers and workforce was running like little bee’s and I felt a bit sad that I will miss the light switch-on.

_Z1A6047WEEK 47 b

People, however most of the time minded their own daily business.

_Z1A6046WEEK 47 b

On Thursday I had a meeting in QUEENS HOUSE SHOWCASE and I was lucky to see the CLAIRE HOLDSTOCK’S RUIN VALUE.

_Z1A6056WEEK 47 b_Z1A6055WEEK 47 b_Z1A6054WEEK 47 b_Z1A6053WEEK 47 b

THESE ARE NOT COLOURED PORK SCRATCHINGS – JUST IN CASE YOU WONDERED.

The artwork is very pleasant – in and out of context. I really want to find out more about the artwork and I might attend one of the many drop-in sessions at the Queens House Showcase on the 7th December.

On Saturday the big hype about the COCA- COLA TRUCK TOUR UK – KINGSTON UPON HULL was very obvious – the traffic in town and masses of people in general and quite honestly I was not sure I can be asked. It wasn’t really about the culture, it was very cold and do I really want to ruin my childhood vision about the Coca-Cola Christmas adverts, Santa Claus and the magic truck???

But I happened to be in the area, so eeehhh – why not.

_Z1A7339WEEK 47 b_Z1A7289WEEK 47 b_Z1A7297WEEK 47 b_Z1A7304WEEK 47 b

Quite honestly – there was no feeling of Christmas spirit and there was no chance that I would wait 30 min to get a SMALL can of ice cold Coca-Cola.

_Z1A7312WEEK 47 b

But there was a lot of people making the most of it and that is always worth celebrating.

_Z1A7320WEEK 47 b_Z1A7325WEEK 47 b_Z1A7331WEEK 47 b_Z1A7334WEEK 47 b

Last but not least – all week I have been hopelessly making visits to Princess Quay for the CENTRE OF ATTENTION

_Z1A7656WEEK 47 b

Twice I visited and the shutters were hiding potentially one of the most interesting exhibits this season.
On Friday, I found out it is open from the 24-26th November. Lovely. But this is a lesson to learn for the future.

_Z1A7678WEEK 47 b_Z1A7672WEEK 47 b_Z1A7673WEEK 47 b

_Z1A7670WEEK 47 b_Z1A7668WEEK 47 b_Z1A7665WEEK 47 b_Z1A7661WEEK 47 b

After a quick sneak around I thought – I don’t have enough, I want more of this creative madness. The brave people who are wearing prosthetics are worth celebrating anyway, they have moved on and making the most of their lives. But this is the next level awesomeness. I would definitely like to see more of this. And not just in the galleries – on the streets [although probably not very practical] and definitely in the fashion magazines, fashion shows, runways. Amazing!!!!!!

_Z1A7657WEEK 47 b_Z1A7660WEEK 47 b

NEXT WEEK AND FOR THE FUTURE I HAVE A TO DO LIST, THE MOST EXCITING THINGS ARE PROBABLY THE LIMITLESS AND LOOK UP: FLOE – HEINRICH AND PALMER

HAPPY CULTURE PEOPLE.

MY CITY OF CULTURE – MY HULL – WEEK 46

ON THE WEEK WHEN HER MAJESTY THE QUEEN ARRIVED TO HULL I CONTINUED TO PHOTOGRAPH HULL COMEDY FESTIVAL 2017 AND WIZ AROUND HULL FOR CULTURE.

BUT THERE WAS A SIGNIFICANT HIGHLIGHT IN MY WEEK – I MET THE GREAT BRITISH PHOTOGRAPHER MARTIN PARR, WHO I DEARLY ADMIRE. SINCE INTRODUCED TO HIM WHILST STUDYING A DEGREE IN PHOTOGRAPHY [A DISSERTATION ON MARTIN PARR AND KITSCH LATER..] I HAVE NEVER STOPPED LOVED HIS WORK. MARTIN PARR’S WORK HAS A MASSIVE INFLUENCE ON MANY YOUNG PHOTOGRAPHERS AND OF COURSE ME.

MARTIN PARR WAS PART OF THE HULL BEERMAT PHOTOGRAPHY FESTIVAL AND HE CHOOSE THE BEST OUT OF THE SHORTLIST CURATED BY GRAEME OXBY. AND ON WEDNESDAY HE WAS IN HULL, KARDOMAH 94 TO ANNOUNCE THE WINNERS AND TALK ABOUT HIS LIFE AND WORK.

_Z1A4137WEEK 46 b

I HAVE TO SAY MASSIVE THANK YOU TO KARDOMAH 94 FOR HAVING ME THERE AS THEIR GUEST PHOTOGRAPHER [BASICALLY AN EXCUSE TO SEE MARTIN PARR] AS I WAS NOT ABLE TO GET THE TICKET AND I WAS NOT PART OF THE LUCKY 20 WINNERS.

ON MY ARRIVAL I SAW MARTIN PARR MUNCHING ON SOME PASTA, PAST HIM GIGGLING MY WAY THROUGH. I REALLY FELT LIKE AN OBSESSED FAN TO JUSTIN BIEBER. LONG STORY SHORT – I HAD TWO CONVERSATIONS WITH MARTIN PARR. FIRST ONE WHERE I CALLED HIM MY MADONNA AND MADE HIM FEEL AWKWARD BY SAYING THESE LOVELY THINGS ABOUT HIM – EMBARRASSING!!!! SECOND – BIT MORE ADULT AND PROFESSIONAL – ABOUT PHOTOGRAPHY AND COMPETITION.

_Z1A4158WEEK 46 b

_Z1A4146WEEK 46 b_Z1A4151WEEK 46 b_Z1A4164WEEK 46 b

HE IS SO CHILLED AND DOWN TO EARTH – OR AS HE LIKES TO DESCRIBE HIMSELF AS VERY MUCH MIDDLE CLASS. OH, WELL. HE IS DEFINITELY MY IDOL IN PHOTOGRAPHY AND I WAS HONOURED TO BE IN THE SAME ROOM AS HIM.

HE ALSO IS GIFTED WITH A GREAT SENSE OF HUMOUR AND HE USED THAT TO TALK ABOUT HIS RECENT PHOTO PROJECT HULL, PORTRAIT OF A CITY: OLIVIA ARTHUR AND MARTIN PARR – HUMBER STREET GALLERY.

_Z1A4178WEEK 46 b

THE HULL BEERMAT PHOTOGRAPHY FESTIVAL WAS AN INTERESTING PROJECT WITH A CREATIVE IDEA BEHIND – PEOPLE HAVE THEIR SAY ON CELEBRATING HULL THROUGH PHOTOGRAPHS TAKEN BY PEOPLE – NOT PROFESSIONALS [WHICH IS WHY I MIGHT NOT HAVE BEEN SELECTED HA] AND BRINGING THE 20 PHOTOGRAPHS TO HULL PUBS – ON BEERMATS.

_Z1A4128WEEK 46 b_Z1A4197WEEK 46 b

THIS WAS A VERY HAPPY HOUR IN MY LIFE. AND JUST TO END THIS CHAPTER – MARTIN PARR REVEALED THAT HE ALWAYS HAD TO DO COMMERCIAL WORK TO SUPPORT HIS STRANGE PROJECTS. WHICH MAKES SENSE, BUT IT WAS ANOTHER REMINDER OF THE STRUGGLES OF BEING A PHOTOGRAPHER, TRYING TO MAKE LIVING AND KEEPING THE DIGNITY, CREATIVITY AND ORIGINALITY.

Last week was super busy as the week was full-on comedy gigs night after night, plus other jobs, so I had to be smart with the culture I was looking for and taking photos. Basically I had two hours on Thursday.

First – whilst doing my research of what is going on, I tried to look for the less mainstream events/exhibitions and came across a small display at Hull&East Riding Museum – EXPLORING ISLAMIC COLLECTIONS. Small just because I’ve seen it and it is small. But still interesting.

_Z1A4768WEEK 46 b_Z1A4762WEEK 46 b

Hull&East Riding Museum is one of those that remind me of the dreadful school trips to the boring history museums. But as a grown up I have learned that I don’t have to be interested in everything displayed. And to appreciate the classics and at least attempt loving the history is already a thumbs up.
And I really appreciated the massive mammoth and ancient PC. Kind of made my day by looking at these silly reminders of humanity.

_Z1A4758WEEK 46 b

_Z1A4763WEEK 46 b

..because there was mammoths in East Yorkshire once upon a time..

On my way there, I was also appreciating Hull. I was rushing, but I still find time to stop and watch Hull and people. This time I followed a group of tourists getting some Hull themed walks with a guide.

_Z1A4715WEEK 46 b

Also finally took a photo of the newly refurbished Beverley Gate… kind of… it is very flat. This might be one of those subjects that only make sense with people in the scene..to be continued._Z1A4739WEEK 46 b_Z1A4730WEEK 46 b

Same day, same two hour slot I spotted and took photographs of the new roboty light installation things. WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE? by JASON BRUGES STUDIO is currently being installed in at Beverley Gate, Trinity Square and the Museum Quarter in advance of the artwork’s grand opening on Friday 1st December.

_Z1A4743WEEK 46 b

To finish of the culture surprises I happened to see Hull Maritime Museum and Ferens Art Gallery lit up with stars. No tripod to hold the steady shot meant just a quick snap. I am sure that there will be more light installation surprises and I might get a tripod out for these special occasions.

_Z1A4905WEEK 46 B

+ AS MENTIONED BEFORE HULL COMEDY FESTIVAL 2017 WAS IN FULL SPIN SO I PHOTOGRAPHED FIVE FANTASTIC NIGHTS OF COMEDY. ONE OF THE HIGHLIGHTS WAS THE BEST OF ‘ULL WITH AN AMAZING LOCAL LINE UP AND  MY FAVES THE KAGOOLS.

_Z1A4538BESTOFULL B

NEXT FEW WEEKS ARE AGAIN BUSY BUSY, SO I WILL BE SUPER HAPPY IF I CAN FIND TIME FOR SOME CULTURE. ANY GOOD SUGGESTIONS?

MY CITY OF CULTURE – MY HULL – WEEK 45

HELLO CULTURE LOVERS.

FOR THE FIRST TIME I HAVE GIVEN MYSELF TOO MUCH CULTURE HENCE TOO MUCH WORK TODAY SO I’LL KEEP THIS SHORT ‘N SWEET.

FIRST OF ALL – IN A NORMAL WEEK I WOULD BE RATHER HAPPY WITH THE AMOUNT OF CULTURE ACHIEVED LAST WEEK, BUT AS THE HULL COMEDY FESTIVAL 2017 IS TAKING UP SOO MUCH TIME AND ENERGY, I AM RUSHING TODAY TO SQUEEZE IN MY CULTURE WONDERS IN ONE SENTENCE.

WEEK 45 LIST:

THE TOOL APPRECIATION SOCIETY @HULL CENTRAL LIBRARY

TORN @HUMBER STREET GALLERY

RE:DEFINED @STUDIO ELEVEN

ACT VI:THE LAND OF GREEN GINGER UNLEASHED

+ 4 NIGHTS OF LIVE COMEDY ACROSS VENUES IN THE CITY

_Z1A2653WEEK 45 b

HULL CENTRAL LIBRARY IS PRETTY COOL LIBRARY AND BEFORE HEADING TO  THE TOOL APPRECIATION SOCIETY @HULL CENTRAL LIBRARY EXHIBITION I FOUND THIS BEAUTIFUL PHOTO 3D SCULPTURE THAT CELEBRATES EVENTS VIA CULTURE OF READING, LOVING BOOKS AND LITERATURE (?)

_Z1A2665WEEK 45 b

_Z1A2660WEEK 45 b

NOTE: APOLOGISE IF I HAVE BROKEN RULES BY TAKING PHOTOGRAPHS OF THE TOOL APPRECIATION SOCIETY @HULL CENTRAL LIBRARY DISPLAYS/EXHIBITION. I ONLY NOTICED THE SIGN ON MY WAY OUT WHEN IT WAS ALL DONE AND DUSTED. WOOPS.

_Z1A2669WEEK 45 b_Z1A2673WEEK 45 b_Z1A2676WEEK 45 b_Z1A2687WEEK 45 b

EXHIBITION IS LOVELY, SPACE CERTAINLY GIVES A SENSE OF GREATNESS. FOR WHAT ITS WORTH – WE RARELY THINK ABOUT ART OF MAKING TOOLS, AS WE USE TOOLS TO MAKE SOMETHING. ARTIST LINDA BROTHWELL HAS TAKEN THIS THOUGHT TO ANOTHER LEVEL AND I AM SO PROUD OF MYSELF FOR RECOGNISING THE IDEA BEHIND THIS. CULTUREEEEEEEE!!!!

ON MY WEEKS ONLY PROPER CULTURE DAY [APART FROM ACT VI:THE LAND OF GREEN GINGER UNLEASHED] I ACTUALLY WAS LOOKING FOR CLUES OF SATURDAY’S EXTRAVAGANZA, SO I TOOK AN OPPORTUNITY TO SAY HELLO TO MY CITY JUST BY WALKING THROUGH THE TINY STREETS AND ALLEYS.

_Z1A2627WEEK 45 b_Z1A2634WEEK 45 b_Z1A2694WEEK 45 b

AND SAID HELLO TO THE WEIRD AND  WONDERFUL HULL

_Z1A2690WEEK 45 b

I FOUND THREE CLUES OF ACT VI:THE LAND OF GREEN GINGER UNLEASHED AND ONE OF THEM PROUDLY SPOTTED IN THE DARK HOUR TUESDAY NIGHT.

_Z1A2621WEEK 45 b_Z1A2644WEEK 45 b_Z1A2646WEEK 45 b

THERE WAS A FEW IDEAS OF VISITING EXHIBITIONS, BUT SOME WERE STILL ASLEEP WHEN I WALKED PAST, SO I POPPED DOWN TO HUMBER STREET FOR THE TORN @HUMBER STREET GALLERY AND RE:DEFINED @STUDIO ELEVEN.

TORN @HUMBER STREET GALLERY

_Z1A2696WEEK 45 b

THIS CERTAINLY WAS NOT MY CUP OF TEA AND I THINK YOU CAN TELL, HUH?

RE:DEFINED @STUDIO ELEVEN

_Z1A2725WEEK 45 b

I AM ABSOLUTELY INLOVE WITH STUDIO ELEVEN AND I NEED TO BE A BIT ASHAMED THAT I’VE NEVER BEEN IN THERE BEFORE.

I HAVE STARTED TO LEARN THAT SOMETIMES THE PLACES THAT YOU LEAST EXPECT TO SURPRISE YOU, ACTUALLY MAKE YOUR DAY/WEEK. AND THIS WAS DEFINITELY THE CASE.

COASTAL DISAPPOINTMENTS WAS MY FAVOURITE EXHIBITION [THAT IS NOT PHOTOGRAPHY OF COURSE] SINCE STATES OF PLAY @HUMBER STREET GALLERY BACK IN AUGUST. AND I WAS RAVING ABOUT THAT EXHIBITION…..

_Z1A2737WEEK 45 b_Z1A2713WEEK 45 b_Z1A2709WEEK 45 b_Z1A2739WEEK 45 b

IT IS SO WITTY,SHARP AND A PERFECT DOSE OF CONSUMER-CONCERNED SARCASM. LOVED IT. AND MOST OF THE LITTLE SOUVENIR BITS WOULD BE THE PERFECT PRESENT FOR MY LOVELY SISTER. AN THIS IS WHAT ART SHOULD BE ABOUT – FINDING THE PEOPLE WHO WOULD MAKE SENSE AND USE OUT OF IT.

OTHER BITS LOVELY TOO:

_Z1A2720WEEK 45 b_Z1A2728WEEK 45 b

+ THANK YOU FOR THE BEAUTIFUL CHRISTMAS CARDS.

SATURDAY OFF COURSE WAS THE DAY FOR ACT VI:THE LAND OF GREEN GINGER UNLEASHED TO FINALLY SEE DAYLIGHT [NIGHTLIGHT]

THE LEGEND SAYS THAT ANETE WAS WAITING FOR THIS IMPATIENTLY FOR WEEKS AND DESPITE THAT WAS LATE FOR THE BEGINNING. AHHH.

IT WAS A VERY TIRED SATURDAY WITH A FULL ON COMEDY NIGHT AFTER, SO THE ENERGY THAT WENT INTO TAKING PERFECT SNAPS WAS JUST NOT THERE. HOWEVER I LOVED EVERYTHING. IT WAS SWEET, CLEVER, TINY BIT SCARY AND FUN FOR THE LITTLE ONES. I WAS ALSO “ATTACKED” BY ONE OF THE CHARACTERS, I WISH SOMEONE RECORDED THAT…

OVERALL GREAT WEEK, I JUST WISH I HAD A BIT OF SENSIBILITY TO MY ABILITIES TO FINISH EVERYTHING AND STILL BE CAPABLE OF PHOTOGRAPHING/EDITING THE HULL COMEDY FESTIVAL 2017

THIS WEEK IS CRAZY, MY DIARY IS FULL, SO I WILL BE LUCKY TO GET OUT AND GET CULTURED. IF…

PLEASE, HAVE A LOOK AT THE HULL COMEDY FESTIVAL 2017 PROGRAMME, THERE IS SO MUCH GOING ON AND 99% OF IT IS TOP MARKS COMEDY FOR ALL SHAPES AND SIZES [OF THE BRAIN CELLS].

SEE YOU NEXT WEEK :)

MY CITY OF CULTURE – MY HULL – WEEK 44

HELLO.

INTERESTING, TOUGH AND FULL OF THINGS THIS WEEK.

FIRST OF ALL – BIG SHOUT OUT TO HULL COMEDY FESTIVAL 2017 AS THIS WEEK IT KICKED OFF WITH A BANG – ANNA MORRIS: THE BITCHELORS AND THE NOT SO LATE NIGHT SHOW WITH ROSS AND JOSH.

+ A LITTLE PEAK IN TO A SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE @JUBILEE CHURCH

_Z1A1661SATNIGHTLIVE b

_Z1A2060SATNIGHTLIVE b_Z1A1810SATNIGHTLIVE b_Z1A1896SATNIGHTLIVE b

I HAVE THE HONOURS TO BE PART OF THE FESTIVAL AND CALL MYSELF THE OFFICIAL PHOTOGRAPHER.

SECOND – I HAD A BIT OF CULTURE AS WELL AS COMEDY:

TURNER & THE WHALE

Turner & The Whale was no photographs kind of an exhibition, but I thought I’ll let you know that I was there and one of the frames including a famous painting is stunning to look at. Cheers!

ELEPHANTS IN THE ROOM

These sculptures are there to remind of and tackle the social inequality of homelessness with The Neil Hudgell Trust and artist Laurence Vallieres.

_Z1A0961WEEK44 b_Z1A0970WEEK44 b

HULL, PORTRAIT OF A CITY: OLIVIA ARTHUR AND MARTIN PARR – HUMBER STREET GALLERY

_Z1A0992WEEK44 b

My third time seeing Martin Parr’s exhibition and I brought this beauty with me. I think we together played a little game of trying to recognise locations of the places, whereas on my own I only appreciate the beauty of photographs. Nice change not to be overly obsessed with Martin Parr.

Speaking of which – Martin Parr’s Colouring Book is out and there are a fantastic opportunity to send in the coloured pages and win one of his prints – signed. WOW.

_Z1A0993WEEK44 b_Z1A0995WEEK44 b_Z1A0987WEEK44 b

THE SIXTEEN THOUSAND – C4DI

Came back for one last shot of the whole thing and two kiddies pointing at me, because I thought they were really cute trying to find their brick in those sixteen thousand others. _Z1A1020WEEK44 b

_Z1A1014WEEK44 b

+ stroll round Humber Street and a little unsolved KINGSTON ART GROUP GALLERY AND BOBBY BEASLEY’S PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBITION WAS NOT OPEN AND NOT THERE :(

_Z1A1008WEEK44 b_Z1A1010WEEK44 b_Z1A1012WEEK44 b

I AM STARTING TO REALISE THAT THERE IS LESS THAN TWO MONTHS LEFT OF THIS CULTURE, WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO NEXT YEAR?

PLENTY TO SEE AND DO THIS WEEK, SO SEE HOW I CAN FIT CULTURE IN THE COMEDY AND OTHER WAY ROUND.

GIGGLES LIVE PRESENTS: THE DELIGHTFUL SAUSAGE: COLD HARD CACHE

I LIKE TO CONSIDER MYSELF AS A PROFESSIONAL COMEDY PHOTOGRAPHER – I HAVE DONE IT A LOT AND I LOVE DOING IT. IN THE HONOURS OF 10TH ANNIVERSARY HULL COMEDY FESTIVAL STARTING TOMORROW I AM GOING TO CELEBRATE HULL COMEDY SCENE THAT I CAPTURED IN JULY.

THE HEADLINERS – THE DELIGHTFUL SAUSAGE FEATURING AMAZING AMY GLEDHILL AND THE ONE AND ONLY CHRIS CANTRILL

OTHER AMAZING ACTS OF THE NIGHT:

Dave Walker
David Bugden
Becky Hannant
Nathan Cruz
David Smith

I AM SUPER EXCITED FOR THIS YEARS HULL COMEDY FESTIVAL BECAUSE THE LINE UP IS ACE. FROM THE KAGOOLS, JACK GLEADOW TO LOCAL STARS LIKE JED SALISBURY, GARY JENNISON [THEM TWO ARE THE BEST FESTIVAL ORGANISERS AND ALL THE HARD WORK IS THEIRS] AND FAMOUSE’S LIKE ANNA MORRIS BITCHELORS, THE NOT SO LATE NIGHT SHOW WITH ROSS AND JOSH, GREG DAVIES AND SO ON….
