I have just minutes into the Sunday/Monday gap that usually is my own deadline for the previous weeks culture indulgence, so I will keep it sweet and short.

As I was landing from Latvia to the Queens property less than a week ago, I was thinking what a strange land it is. So many beautiful things here, so many doors opened for me, but still  – are we in the perfect relationship?

Few days of sulking and thinking and I was thrown into the madness – Humber Street Sesh 2017

I was not sure if the holiday hangover was over, but I was left with no choice – four years in a row I missed the Sesh for various reasons and last year I swore that 2017 will be THE YEAR.

+ someone offered a “brief”, so the festival visit was on the full work mode.

The gallery is less than a half of “reasonable” photos taken in the 12 hrs because on time pressure for post process – some of the photos are random, some acts/bands photographed not even sure where from/named after…a mess.

Plus half way I lost my precious map, work list and wish list, so that made me even more of a mess.
I was a mess photographer, but I think there is a great message in my photos – Hull likes a good party and Hull can also host a great party.

Now just days away from returning to Hull after two weeks of living in a different world. As I was away from the British, from the culture last week, on the 30th week I can reflect on the challenge, culture in Hull and my relationship with Great British.

Every year I come home, Latvia for lengthy holiday with my family, friends, life and memories. Seven years away from Latvia has been beautifully changing, but sad at the same time.

Last year on return I started my HOME GLORY photo series, celebrating my origins, land of everything beautiful and people.

My life, especially social, is often lived through the lens, so coming home with a similar mindset is rather interesting. I mix pleasure with work, being completely off the routines back in the UK.

Half way on holiday I managed to drop my phone in the loo, so I lost that quick access to social media and quite honestly – interest in having one. So odd glimpse of culture in Hull made me realise that I am missing out on bloody loads, but it was not a regret. [this next line is the most important in this post]

Hull is not silent, it is bursting with potential perfect photographs celebrating culture,people, places and important stories. Therefore I feel like my Hull 2017 challenge is my welcome call back home, to Hull. And yes, I have two homes, so I am incredibly lucky, each home offering me something different to “rub on” my self-esteem and ego.

Hull is AMAZING and this year I my relationship with the city has improved – we are totally in love.

On my return work waits, there is a lot of work with culture and with various clients, so there will be no rest until end September.

Just before I left, on the notes if reflections I visited the reflective patios in Old town opposite Hull Trinity Church. The mirrored bits of pavement is another photo-must-take, usually with planning and patience. For me – visual document. For now…

WELCOME TO THE 27th WEEK OF HULL CITY OF CULTURE

I CANNOT BELIEVE THAT I HAVE MANAGED TO BE CONSISTENT FOR 27 WEEKS IN A ROW. AFTER THE FIRST WEEK AND THE SPECTACULAR OPENING FOR MADE IN HULL I TOOK ON THIS CHALLENGE NOT THINKING MUCH ABOUT ITS IMPACT ON MY LIFE.

I AM THANKFUL TO HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY AND FREEDOM TO TAKE PHOTOS OF 2017 IN HULL. YAAY.

This week I had strict plan. And despite some fall backs, I have gone through the plan and it feels GOOD.

I was very excited for the PAPER CITY for so many good reasons – I absolutely love G.F Smith paper and products, I love the feel, look and smell of paper in general and the locations are the culture hot spots that are pleasure to visit.

I am so glad that such large scale company as G.F Smith share their passion for paper and we can appreciate the amazing produce they create.

The artwork is pretty spectacular and the space collaborates with its scale. Amazing.

The paper fish by Lazerian was the most talked about so was the main point of interest. As spectacular as it was, I was more fascinated and amused by the artist and his little workshop van in the same space.

Plus there is no chance I can get photos of him without buying something, that would be way rude.

He really reminded me of a very silly Zach Galifianakis, the American actor from Hangover and other films. As he is artist, his personality is a bit of a mystery, character overload and guessing game, I really really enjoyed my five minutes with him.

The exhibition was as wonderful as the people working in the church [coffee and tea, biscuits and warm welcomes]. The lady from church told me that as soon as the community recognized the opportunity to share their story, they collected the art and people connected to the such an important and big part of Hull, once upon a time.

It was touching to see the Lord Landline building at St. Andrews Dock as it was many years ago. I was also hearing stories from people who remember to be it just like that back in the day and how they feel about the loss of industry.

 

 

On Thursday I was in the new Two Gingers Coffee Shop for a quick meet up and OH MIGHTY DUCK. COFFEE TO DIE FOR AND CUTE LIL’ INTERIOR THOUGHT THROUGH IN EVERY INCH. LOVED IT.

One of the “two gingers” was there on the day and he is as lovely as ever, pleasure to have some coffee time there. The coffee to die for part definitely applies to one of the most expensive coffee beans ever bought, but smell [and taste] wonderful. So again – forth it.

Good to see other parts of the city changing and adding good places to be on the list.

THE WEEK OF THE CULTURE JOYS HAS ENDED SUCCESSFULLY. WEEK 28th IS A MYSTERY JET, AS I AM PRE-HOLIDAY PANICKING AND WORKING A LOT THIS WEEK.

DEFINITELY WILL KEEP SOMETHING UNDER MY SLEEVE FOR THE TWO WEEKS AWAY FROM HULL.

HELLO AND WELCOME ON THE WEEK 26th OF HULL CITY OF CULTURE 2017.

 

Traditionally as I do on Mondays, I am sat writing and reflecting on last week. And it was a big one. Not only the work was interesting, culture was as wonderful as ever.

First – THE TRAIN TRACK AND THE BASKET @HULL PARAGON INTERCHANGE

Funny story actually – this has been on my wishlist for a while, but as 12 o’clock station visit is not something I do I kept leaving it. And last week was the last week for the installation to be on.

I thought that the installation involves lady dressed in 1950’s clothing with a travelling basket getting in and out of trains – a performance. Upon arrival at the station I went to the Hull City Of Culture 2017 Welcome Pod to get the exact info.
When I was told that it is all around me  I felt really silly. That’s another lesson in my basket – read the info about events, performances, installations.

So there I was, surrounded by artwork presenting events between 1848 and 1914, when more than 2 million people arrived to Hull by ship from mainland Europe, then left by train for the ports of Liverpool and Southampton. They were on their way to a new life in the USA, Canada and South Africa. The artist Claire Barber used windows shaped like an upturned baskets and after an extensive research created the large scale artworks.

The site for the artwork suggests both beginnings and endings. Station can be a place for a long goodbye and a warm welcome. I have been there, we all have at some point.

Apart from the disappointment [which is really my own fault], I thought it brightens up the place. I am not sure if the general public have spotted it, because the artwork blends in their busy daily lives….

The day was incredibly rainy, so the station was an escape for some and as a rare visitor I was quite happy to be part of the scene.

On Thursday I was finally in town in the right time on the right date for the (In)visible Dancing.

I was waiting for it for a week and on the day I was ready for it a half an hour early.

Whilst waiting I got chatting with a lovely Hull City Of Culture 2017 volunteer. He was a right character in the most beautiful way.

And he as well as made my day, ruined it for me. He told me about the PAPER CITY opening earlier in the morning which sounded like a visual/photographic wonderland to my ears. I knew that it opens on that day, but was not aware of the extravaganza of the opening – flying paper “things”. OHHHHH MIGHTY DUCK. Lesson nr. 2 that week – KEEP YOUR EYES AND EARS OPEN AT ALL TIMES.

He kindly gave me a copy of a tiny book telling the story and I was feeling the pain. But definitely on my list for the 27th week of #getcultured.

BACK TO THE (IN)VISIBLE DANCING.

I went to one of the last dance performances building up to the Finale on the 1st of July and I was impatiently excited whilst waiting for the familiar figures to appear on the Jameson Street.

The award winning dance theatre company Protein was joined by local musicians and dancers. The info flyer states that the performance will sweep you away from your daily cares and shopping with an entertaining and unusual street show.

And it was just that and a bit more.

Whilst snapping the fast paced and ever changing scenes, one of the directors of the performance approached me and asked if we can have a chat after the show. It was rather lovely to know that they appreciate local photographers taking time and willing to share the photos with them. That’s the plan.

On Saturday I was trying to stay work free, but I heard rumours about something happening @Zebedee’s Yard. So I headed there with a hope that it is something worth the walk.

The sound installation from sound artist and composer Ray Lee, renowned for creating music for public places with generated bell sounds.

Going back to the culture lesson nr. 2 – did not know the timings, so turned up when it was just finished. ahhggrr.
But the bells themselves, surrounded by metal structures looked spectacular. The sun was out so there was two good reasons for this to be on my blog.

Hull City Of Culture 2017 and the photo challenge has become part of my life. Sneaked up on me at the beginning of the year and now I can’t imagine my week without the random visits, walks, places and people. Random – this week has been one of those. Every Sunday or Monday I sit down, panic about the deadline and look through the photos taken. Although this week has been work-crazy, I have managed to photograph two different [completely] cultural things.
CASTING ON HUMBER: Castaway Act on Sobriety.

The Sobriety Project in partnership with Castaway Goole received funding for this unique project from Hull UK City of Culture 2017’s Creative Communities programme.

Lady called Sarah Louise Davies was so lovely, she sent me the press release with some more info about the performance.

The cast are all experienced members of Castaway Music Theatre who work together weekly in Goole with Sarah Davies.

15 members of the group will be joined by additional professional performers, Hull City of Culture volunteers and members of community groups who are participating in workshops in Hull and Goole.

Castaway Music Theatre member Anna said: “We know what we’re doing. But we don’t know what will happen.

Martin Green, Director of Hull 2017, said: “The Creative Communities Programme encourages local groups and performers to think outside the box and this project has certainly done that.”

It really was something different in the most beautiful way. I went to the very first performance, mid week, early daytime, so I saw the first reaction from the public.
It made me smile, art and culture is for everyone, not just to view, but to be part of. The members of public had the opportunity to become part of the performance and jiggle along. And I have learned to dance whilst on camera duty…

The second #getculturedmovement activity was something completely different. Other spectrum of the culture. The long hunted Ground Gallery down Beverley Road was hosting a PEACE PARTY.

One culture event leads to another – that is how I got an invite to the party. Martin Berger –  saxafonist and clarnetist from Spain was playing at the Casting On Humber, so he invited me to come along.

Saturday was an intense day that was measured in 18,000 steps and a lot of fresh air, and  a lot of photos taken. DO I REALLY FEEL LIKE A PEACE PARTY??

But my gut feeling told me to get my camera back on and at least have a nosy. I guess after two attempts to see the gallery – art gem in the middle of quite a culture-quiet area, this was my chance.

I arrived and there was “peace” hippies gathering and I was about to experience a cultural awkwardness…

I am familiar with the culture, back in the day I was hanging out with few and the lifestyle, although not for me, seemed fascinating.

But the shock hit me – all dressed up in Ray Bans, fancy camera, Ombre hair…I was feeling like the capitalist pig [yeah, I’ve got the definition for you to read] and I guess I am a little bit, but that was right in my face.

People there have the community that is based on love and peace, ideology they share and the lifestyle that makes them free spirits. At least the outer shell says that.

There was a lot of friendly and chatty people, it was welcoming, but more than ever I had to convince them that my presence is genuine.

About the gallery – strong vibes of artist PINKYVISION. I have been following the work on social platforms and that made me feel a bit more comfortable.

Also very strong vibes of the workshops that Ground Gallery  hosts – art is covering nearly every inch of the space, it is like an art hub, the feeling seeing all that is quite special. It is like you are in someone’s world.
So I hope that one day I can go back to the gallery and be part of the art/making of art.

The space is a magical as I expected, so I am so happy that made sure I am not imagining things.

When it comes to the party itself – there was some poetry, talks, music and jokes. Most of it covered the subject of peace and support of the Campaign Against Arms Trade.
These people care and they came together to celebrate that…

Months ago I had a feeling that this week will be the best week of the Hull City Of Culture 2017 photographic challenge and IT WAS F***** AMAZING.

With the sad notes on Tuesday I thought that there is not much that can lift the broken spirits, but it turns out that the unity, togetherness and community spirit will defeat the evil.

WEDNESDAY

On Wednesday I went to the BBC Radio 1’s Academy  to see Bastille for a special Live Lounge.
My reasons for the excitement about BBC Radio 1 being in Hull is simple – that is my radio, my ear-family, my wake up call and I love all the DJ’s, they make me feel like home. Even when I am not in the UK.

Clara Amfo was hosting the Live Lounge and the Q&A with the band.

I was actually really surprised that I was allowed my “professional gear” in both. Usually I would be told off, but this time it was rather lovely.  For the Q&A I was in the front row because I made good friends with few BBC members. Big “cheer” to BBC staff, security and organisers – really welcoming and helpful.

And I am like “OMG I HAVE A PHOTOGRAPH OF BASTILLE, CLARA AMFO” and I have every right to be over the mooooooon.

After the splendid time with Bastille I rushed to have a nosy at the actual Academy so I can milk it as much as my time allows.

Plus I got to speak with to extremely talented photographers Thomas Arran and Shoot J Moore. These two guys I follow religiously on social media streams, they are an inspiration and honestly – motivation. Both have equally a lot of talent, still being different.
I apologise that I behaved like groupie – I think I am one. sorry.

Also a SHOUT OUT TO ALAN RAW – the father of BBC Introducing Humberside, creative director behind the HIP Gallery and other great stuff. He got a shout-out on Mr. Jam’s show the other week and I was really happy getting the broadcast UK wide.

THURSDAY

The new arrival in Hull  Travel Photographer of the Year exhibition down Princess Dock Street was an interest to me. Just cos the Wild Life Photographer of the Year exhibition in Beverly was so incredible, I thought this is right up that level.

The content is fantastic, the display alright and I spotted a few favourites. The space was lacking “the interests” and at that time in the morning, people rushed to work, so I really had to be patient.

SATURDAY

This is not my usual content – politics. But this year I am going to use my vote. On Saturday I went down to Humber Street where an event organised by Anna Bean and the “crew” took place.  We Love Arts and Culture in Support of Labour #GE2017 was the title and because I am trying to understand which labour candidate I would like to vote for, the event was the perfect place for lazy.
I asked a  question of why so many artists choose to vote Labour and I was sold.

People there supported Emma Hardy. And I can see why, her presence is very likable, she seems honest and she understands people and their needs. She was there to speak to people, hear them out. Unfortunately I can’t vote for her, but you can if you live in West Hull or Hessle.

ART IS FOR MANY NOT FOR FEW

THE LAST BUT NOT THE LEAST – for some obvious reasons I had a quick look in to Kingston Art Group Gallery and got introduced with

WITCHE’S KNICKERS [slang/British] plastic bags snagged in trees and bushes – an exhibition that contains paintings and clothes.
Really liked the paintings and absolutely loved the clothes.

Like every other week in 2017 – I had to get some culture into my system.

Sure, life takes over, work gets piled up and some reflections from last week about the impact of Hull City Of Culture 2017 were things that effected my involvement…

The week consisted of two main missions – re visit Skin: Freud, Mueck and Tunick exhibition with friends/family cos I thought not seeing Mueck at the Ferens Art Gallery is rude.

Off course no photographs allowed, so …..

Also we went down the HIP Gallery to have a fresh view of the newest exhibition – The Ragman’s Son

“George Norris is “The Ragman’s Son”. He grow up in the Hessle Road area of Hull trolling the streets and 10 foots with his horse and cart collecting scrap metal. Let George share with you his life, his family and memories caught on camera. The exhibition will be Curated by HIP Gallery’s own Alan Raw, who has a particular interest in George’s work as he is himself the great grandson of a West Hull scrap merchant and a Norris family customer.”

NOTE: According to some unofficial sources, Alan Raw did not get any financial help from Hull City Of Culture 2017 so he took the initiative and organised this himself. So this exhibition can’t be found on the Hull City Of Culture 2017 website and isn’t part of the event list.
I find it bit sad and controversial – as this is supposed to be the celebration of Hull and what can be more Hull that The Ragman’s Son.
Really good image content and lovely to see the rawness of the subject.

7 ALLEYS/ THE LAND OF GREEN GINGER @EAST PARK

7 Alleys  was something that I wanted to see through the lens – I knew the potential image content could blew the socks off so on Saturday, after a very long day, I dressed warm and headed to East Park.

I was greeted [not really] by a grumpy security officer who told me that unless I am from press, I can’t take photos. BECAUSE IN THE DARK WE USE FLASH.

Only the small-minded in photography can’t get their heads around ISO and the upcoming light will require zero flash light. BAM!!!

It was quite interesting to be part of something that is a bit of a secret until you experience it. People really mad for it in a good way, so there was a lot of pushing, running, squeezing and apologising. But I got there, I took some amazing photos and fully experienced the light/sound/firework/human magic.

It was very tiring and physical work, really difficult to deal with crowds whilst focusing on the perfect image. But heey – who said it is easy.

Here is a full-ish gallery of the amazing stunts, lights, fireworks and action. It is never the same through the lens, but this will be a good reminder of what went on.

There was a lot of WOW – moments, so I hope that The Land Of Green Ginger will have something along those lines soon…

Week 6 of the City Of Culture 2017 has been very exciting for me. I don’t know if that was because I found the pub out of town in Hull that thinks it has the most culture, or if it was the company of fellow photographer imagesaremoments  when visiting  .

At the beginning of the week I was in a hunt for the Ye Olde White Harte and the famous skull.

I must admit that I am embarrassed to say that I had to google-map myself there and  I DID NOT KNOW THAT THE PLACE EXIST.

The beer garden is a bit magic and the pub is full of character.

I questioned the bar staff girls [lovely ladies] about the skull and it turns out it is a real skull found on the premises. It is assumed that it is a 19 year old girl…So the characters of the pub and potential ghost presences are even more fascinating.

As there was a staff meeting and I was literally getting in the way, I only took a quick snap of the skull and left with a promise to come back for a pint one day.

As I made my work to work, I was armed to look for “culture” in outskirts of Hull.

And then I found a pub… that states it has the most culture of them all.

Inkermann from outside looks awesome. It is like a gem in the middle of nowhere and must be the place for the locals.

And there are stories behind the pub and the “massage salon” next door….

The reason why all this is on my blog WEEK 6, is simple – when I am looking, I find these fascinating places and people in Hull. And you certainly need to know about it. Cos it is not just the main events of City of Culture we celebrate, we celebrate little things as well.

The next day I headed to Hull University and Brynmor Jones Library to see the Lines of Thought – A British Museum Touring Exhibition at Hull University .

I invited a fellow photographer Sergej/imagesaremoments  to join me and we entered the world of posh study area and the coolest library seen.

Exhibition was very well attended for a Wednesday daytime.

I was impressed with the some of the drawings and also maybe discovered the first abstract/illusion drawing.

 

Next door there was another exhibition. Sometimes I don’t pay attention to where I go, so all I know it was a Hull University collection….

When we were finished with the stationary art, we had to have a look around the recently refurbished library. As a graduated student, I think that the library is the perfect place where to have a little time with books and all the work you have to do. And the facilities are beautiful.

imagesaremoments was appreciating the architecture and all’ so we got a permission to go upstairs and see the beautiful view from the 7th floor of the library. I was stunned by the views and the environment students can access to study. WOW.

We also had a walk around the Hull University grounds, imagesaremoments shared his passion for buildings and architecture in general.

 

imagesaremoments look at the buildings in a very different way then I do. I witnessed the passion for it and the way he photographs every bit of “excitement”.

MY CITY OF CULTURE – MY HULL – WEEK 1

This year has started with something very special. HULL CITY OF CULTURE 2017. Something that Hull has been preparing for quite a while. And I want to contribute, for you, for Hull and mainly for myself.

I have set myself a challenge to be part of this year through the lens.
Hull is my home and recent viewings of Made in Hull sound and light display set this journey off with a little tear in my eye. Being proud of this city and feeling the connection is what the whole point of the events through the year is.

The first week of City of Culture 2017 was all about Made in Hull and embracing the history, heritage and celebration of the last 70 years of life in the city.

The use of large-scale projection on buildings, illuminated skylines, soundscapes, shop windows and live performances transforms Hull into a big stage for everyone.

I haven’t been on top of the game with finding the perfect timing or location to capture the whole picture, only very limited access due to the crowds [the reason why I regret missing all the work opportunity application deadlines].

As per usual I was looking for people, those very “human” moments and ohh, I love you Hull, I love you people.
