Week 23 of the challenge has flown by – again. Time just flies and last week especially I was living in a bubble – week blended in as one long day with a lot of amazing things, cool photo shoots [one very cool solid] and great people.

Last week obviously went down to Hull School of Art&Design – AS THEY CALL IT THE BRODRICK GALLERY NOW – for the degree show.

First of all massive CONGRATS to Fine Art students for having the best social/promo/marketing presence I’ve seen in years. They are only bunch of students [are they?], but they have done such a brilliant job. Their exhibition BEHIND THE WHITE WALLS was the one I wanted to see the most, so their marketing has worked.

Having been the student and gone through the degree, I know exactly how difficult and time consuming it is to do everything 100% – creating the final work, writing, researching and preparing the space, and have the perfect social platform to spread the word. Well done!
And off course – some really great stuff – some abstract, some hearty, some personal, some random and some follows issues in the current world.

I must say that this year I have enjoyed Fine Art the most. Illustration is usually the one I have my eyes peeled, but this year the diversity grabbed my attention in Fine Art studios. Lovely to chat with the artists-students behind the work, plus some other deep conversations at Hull School of Art&Design.
The visit took me back one year ago, and I feel so thankful and lucky. For some, like me, the degree opens another world and offers a great platform to be a great artist, photographer or arhitect, illustrator or web designer. And there are few that really make it to the real world.

Also came to a conclusion that I don’t miss being a student. I milked the cow to the last drop with no regrets. It is an absolute pleasure to pop in now and then and see the people that helped me to shape my photography.

Erm, the photography exhibition was alright [mine/ours was miles better hahah]. There was a few problems – previously mentioned Fine Art BEHIND THE WHITE WALLS and photography exhibition – have no idea what the exhibition was called…that’s quite bad. Two students particularly had strong commitment to the Final Major project and photography in general.

The week was literally flying by and on Saturday I had a moment of truth – I have only been to the Degree Show. THAT IS NOT ENOUGH OF CULTURE.

I went through the Hull City Of Culture 2017 website for some inspiration for the day, but was not feeling very social – sometimes I really fancy some quite photo journeys.
Just opposite the St Andrews Quay in West Hull there is the metal sculptures. I pass them at least once a week, wanting to stop, but never do….and I figured that it could be my finishing touch to the WEEK 23 of the challenge.

“Peter’s Lost Trawlermen’s Memorial at St Andrew’s Quay is a poignant tribute to those who lost their lives at sea” – description on Hull City Of Culture 2017 website.

I was taking photographs of a group of people carved in metal kind of knowing about the possible connection with the fishing heritage in Hull and celebrations around it.
But little that I knew that this is part of a big celebration and part of the Hull 17 programme. Fishing Heritage Talks: An Evening with Alec and Peter is only one part of the 17-day festival of celebration in honour of Hull’s fishing heritage.

At least I can say that I appreciated the incredible sculpture to the fullest and explored in detail. As the sculptures are life size – Melanie could not help to be part of the art – and I can’t really blame her. We had fun and the people passing by wondered what the heck is going on there.

That unplanned photo shoot might be a potential selling point, so people who did pass  might come for a closer look and spread the word.

There has been some great shots with the sculpture on Instagram photo groups with star trails, amazing sunsets/sunrises in the background, but I think I’ve done a good job with the summer look.

Hull City Of Culture 2017 and the photo challenge has become part of my life. Sneaked up on me at the beginning of the year and now I can’t imagine my week without the random visits, walks, places and people. Random – this week has been one of those. Every Sunday or Monday I sit down, panic about the deadline and look through the photos taken. Although this week has been work-crazy, I have managed to photograph two different [completely] cultural things.
CASTING ON HUMBER: Castaway Act on Sobriety.

The Sobriety Project in partnership with Castaway Goole received funding for this unique project from Hull UK City of Culture 2017’s Creative Communities programme.

Lady called Sarah Louise Davies was so lovely, she sent me the press release with some more info about the performance.

The cast are all experienced members of Castaway Music Theatre who work together weekly in Goole with Sarah Davies.

15 members of the group will be joined by additional professional performers, Hull City of Culture volunteers and members of community groups who are participating in workshops in Hull and Goole.

Castaway Music Theatre member Anna said: “We know what we’re doing. But we don’t know what will happen.

Martin Green, Director of Hull 2017, said: “The Creative Communities Programme encourages local groups and performers to think outside the box and this project has certainly done that.”

It really was something different in the most beautiful way. I went to the very first performance, mid week, early daytime, so I saw the first reaction from the public.
It made me smile, art and culture is for everyone, not just to view, but to be part of. The members of public had the opportunity to become part of the performance and jiggle along. And I have learned to dance whilst on camera duty…

The second #getculturedmovement activity was something completely different. Other spectrum of the culture. The long hunted Ground Gallery down Beverley Road was hosting a PEACE PARTY.

One culture event leads to another – that is how I got an invite to the party. Martin Berger –  saxafonist and clarnetist from Spain was playing at the Casting On Humber, so he invited me to come along.

Saturday was an intense day that was measured in 18,000 steps and a lot of fresh air, and  a lot of photos taken. DO I REALLY FEEL LIKE A PEACE PARTY??

But my gut feeling told me to get my camera back on and at least have a nosy. I guess after two attempts to see the gallery – art gem in the middle of quite a culture-quiet area, this was my chance.

I arrived and there was “peace” hippies gathering and I was about to experience a cultural awkwardness…

I am familiar with the culture, back in the day I was hanging out with few and the lifestyle, although not for me, seemed fascinating.

But the shock hit me – all dressed up in Ray Bans, fancy camera, Ombre hair…I was feeling like the capitalist pig [yeah, I’ve got the definition for you to read] and I guess I am a little bit, but that was right in my face.

People there have the community that is based on love and peace, ideology they share and the lifestyle that makes them free spirits. At least the outer shell says that.

There was a lot of friendly and chatty people, it was welcoming, but more than ever I had to convince them that my presence is genuine.

About the gallery – strong vibes of artist PINKYVISION. I have been following the work on social platforms and that made me feel a bit more comfortable.

Also very strong vibes of the workshops that Ground Gallery  hosts – art is covering nearly every inch of the space, it is like an art hub, the feeling seeing all that is quite special. It is like you are in someone’s world.
So I hope that one day I can go back to the gallery and be part of the art/making of art.

The space is a magical as I expected, so I am so happy that made sure I am not imagining things.

When it comes to the party itself – there was some poetry, talks, music and jokes. Most of it covered the subject of peace and support of the Campaign Against Arms Trade.
These people care and they came together to celebrate that…

Thank you guys for answering my very straight questions, letting me be part of it and sorry if I need more time to feel comfortable around you.

HERE WE ARE A WEEK LATER…

RADIO 1’s BIG WEEKEND AND ALL THE LOVE RECEIVED AND GIVEN.

THIS SUNDAY IS EMOTIONAL, THIS BLOG POST IS WRITTEN WHILST LISTENING THE ONE LOVE BENEFIT CONCERT IN MANCHESTER AND BEING AWARE OF THE LAST NIGHTS TERROR ATTACK IN LONDON.

This is my way of paying tribute to everyone affected – the horror did not stop me to go out to the festival, celebrate life and music. It was a magic and unforgettable experience. I live my life through photographs, for that reason I brought a 35 mm Minolta film camera [my work gear was not allowed in cos classed as professional].

The photos arrived on Thursday and I looked through them with true joy.

Highlights – Christine and the Queens and Stormzy. The best feeling was the sense of unity and I will never ever forget the energy that the crowds spread through every inch of my blood vessels. It was so special to be part of the same moment.

This isn’t going to be my usual Bible, just want to give share my love for life. Because love is all that matters.

And stay strong.

Months ago I had a feeling that this week will be the best week of the Hull City Of Culture 2017 photographic challenge and IT WAS F***** AMAZING.

With the sad notes on Tuesday I thought that there is not much that can lift the broken spirits, but it turns out that the unity, togetherness and community spirit will defeat the evil.

WEDNESDAY

On Wednesday I went to the BBC Radio 1’s Academy  to see Bastille for a special Live Lounge.
My reasons for the excitement about BBC Radio 1 being in Hull is simple – that is my radio, my ear-family, my wake up call and I love all the DJ’s, they make me feel like home. Even when I am not in the UK.

Clara Amfo was hosting the Live Lounge and the Q&A with the band.

I was actually really surprised that I was allowed my “professional gear” in both. Usually I would be told off, but this time it was rather lovely.  For the Q&A I was in the front row because I made good friends with few BBC members. Big “cheer” to BBC staff, security and organisers – really welcoming and helpful.

And I am like “OMG I HAVE A PHOTOGRAPH OF BASTILLE, CLARA AMFO” and I have every right to be over the mooooooon.

After the splendid time with Bastille I rushed to have a nosy at the actual Academy so I can milk it as much as my time allows.

Plus I got to speak with to extremely talented photographers Thomas Arran and Shoot J Moore. These two guys I follow religiously on social media streams, they are an inspiration and honestly – motivation. Both have equally a lot of talent, still being different.
I apologise that I behaved like groupie – I think I am one. sorry.

Also a SHOUT OUT TO ALAN RAW – the father of BBC Introducing Humberside, creative director behind the HIP Gallery and other great stuff. He got a shout-out on Mr. Jam’s show the other week and I was really happy getting the broadcast UK wide.

THURSDAY

The new arrival in Hull  Travel Photographer of the Year exhibition down Princess Dock Street was an interest to me. Just cos the Wild Life Photographer of the Year exhibition in Beverly was so incredible, I thought this is right up that level.

The content is fantastic, the display alright and I spotted a few favourites. The space was lacking “the interests” and at that time in the morning, people rushed to work, so I really had to be patient.

SATURDAY

This is not my usual content – politics. But this year I am going to use my vote. On Saturday I went down to Humber Street where an event organised by Anna Bean and the “crew” took place.  We Love Arts and Culture in Support of Labour #GE2017 was the title and because I am trying to understand which labour candidate I would like to vote for, the event was the perfect place for lazy.
I asked a  question of why so many artists choose to vote Labour and I was sold.

People there supported Emma Hardy. And I can see why, her presence is very likable, she seems honest and she understands people and their needs. She was there to speak to people, hear them out. Unfortunately I can’t vote for her, but you can if you live in West Hull or Hessle.

ART IS FOR MANY NOT FOR FEW

THE LAST BUT NOT THE LEAST – for some obvious reasons I had a quick look in to Kingston Art Group Gallery and got introduced with

WITCHE’S KNICKERS [slang/British] plastic bags snagged in trees and bushes – an exhibition that contains paintings and clothes.
Really liked the paintings and absolutely loved the clothes.

There is a reason behind the word “challenge”. This week I was super busy with personal project Beardology, night of comedy and taking part in the Larkin Out festival at the Larkin’s Bar down Newland Avenue, plus many other life things, so I had to really push/challenge myself to get cultured regards Hull City Of Culture 2017 this week.

This week the focus was on Daffodil display and my own interpretation of it [just cos I missed it].
Ferens Art Gallery and Skin: Freud, Mueck and Tunick was another must see this week.

When it was too late, I discovered that the Lego Daffodil display is gone. The daffodils were given away to people of Hull for small donation that week. I was very gutted, but I still went down to see it for myself.

But I was told that somewhere in Hull I can find two awesome kids who will show me the daffodils and I will be able to have my own photograph of these amazing Lego creations.

With bribery and good chat-up lines, they proudly showed off their daffodils and talked me through the day when they were queuing, waiting and ended up on TV. I was super jealous, but really happy for them.

Inspired by cheesy mainstream fashion magazine edits, I had an idea of how to have my own daffodil display – bit of patience and work, bit of Hull City Of Culture 2017 colours and yeah- I have my own LEGO DAFFODIL DISPLAY.

Skin: Freud, Mueck and Tunick

LONG STORY SHORT – during the week I watched the film about Sea of Hull in making [incredible sense of unity and a lot of naked, blue people], I knew that the exhibition is out and I headed down there. I had a gut feeling that Mr. Tunik will be conscious about people taking credit of his hard work, so there will be no photos allowed. Which is really crap, cos my visuals are better than words.

And I was spot on – no photos are allowed in the Skin: Freud, Mueck and Tunick exhibition.
The staff has got more than three eyes, so I was constantly followed –  I think it is written on my face – I am a nosy photographer.

I am really sorry, but just as I was told off I took a miserable picture with my phone.

I think it is ridiculous. This artwork would not be if not Hull. And the whole experience and photos is a fantastic reminder that Hull is amazing and people are absolutely crackers in the most incredible way.
Just have the recordings of the exhibition would mean a lot to me and potentially few other.

Just a quick feedback on the actual photographs and the quality of work.

There is no argument about the content, composition and overall idea. But MR. Tunik clearly used a camera that is not suitable for large scale prints. Very bad print quality and it kind of spoiled the viewing experience.

RON MUECK

I did study about Ron Muek and his fascinating life-like sculptures at Uni and I was hoping that I will have the opportunity to see his work in real life. Thanks to Hull City Of Culture 2017 it happened.

Ron Muek is Australian born, London based artist with incredible talent of shocking viewers with his sensitive and exposed sculptures of human beings.

“Mueck’s works command an uncanny ability to amaze with obsessive surface detail and intense psychic discharge. Engaging and wildly popular, they expose our need to validate our humanity, even as they thwart our attempts at full disclosure.”

The Progress Big Man A Conversation with Ron Mueck by Sarah Tanguy

I don’t know about my need to validate my humanity, but I was gazing at the sculptures for quite a while. It felt like I am a tiny ant looking at humans, analysing the danger they can cause.
It is magnificent execution of detail, skin and dimension.
The sculpture Wild Man without a doubt was the one that amazed me the most. The more time I spent looking at it, the more comfortable I felt.

It is definitely a must-see.

The exhibition is part of Artist Rooms Tour and will be there until 13th of August 2017.

Also I was told that there is a small gallery with samples and sketches of Mueck and I WAS ALLOWED TO TAKE PHOTOGRAPHS.

This Bank Holiday Weekend I was hanging out at Larkin’s Bar Hull and Larkin Out festival, so I spoke to a lot of people. In some conversations Hull City Of Culture was mentioned and it is not always sweet.

For example, there are people [from Hull obviously] who feel like this year isn’t really about Hull. We get fed with art that “they” think we should be looking at and relating ourselves with. The people I spoke with are definitely with decent IQ’s and have some sense of culture, so their opinion really matters. And what if they are right? What if we blindly follow what the Hull 17 board is giving us as Hull’s legacy, culture and history. Some of it is a bit out of context, random and too arts’y farts’y.  We have been given a choice of many different culture experiences, but how do we filter what really is important for old and new Hull?

My own experience has been wonderful, I have had the opportunities to be part of amazing things and I appreciate art for its being, for the change that it is bringing to Hull and the sense of coming together to get cultured as a city.

But I also see these points applying to the events.

There was another conversation about Hull 17 bringing photographers outside of Hull to record the celebration – that is a joke considering the talented few in Hull have to hunt for jobs. To make it worse  – one of the photographers have slagged of local photographers… I have no proof of this, but even having the rumour amongst those who live in Hull being a truth, puts the whole Hull 17 to shame.

This year is a distinctive year for local artists, businesses and people, everyone should have a piece of the Hull 17 cake – that was the whole point of this.

Something to think about and reflect on.

GREECE – CRETE – MARCH 2017

WE WORK TO LIVE NOT LIVE TO WORK.

THE MOST PRECIOUS GIFT THAT MONEY CAN BUY IS TO GET OUT THERE AND SEE THE WORLD.

I haven’t been as fortunate to travel loads, but when I was in Crete, I made the most of it.
From the moment we arrived to the moment when we drank the tap water in Xania airport [comes free] before leaving I was completely inlove with the island.

My advice – travel with your gut, off or just before the season, take loads of photos and record small videos of breath taking moments, because when you leave, it all seems like a dream.

Speak to locals, shop locally, drink loads of good vine and eat good food, have early mornings and long walks on a night in the city.

Don’t be afraid to get lost, loose your shoes and leave sand from the beach in your bags and pockets.

Have the craziest car journeys and climb the mountains that you are scared off.

“Baah” with the wild mountain sheep’s and they will “baah” back to you like you are having a conversation, stroke every stray cat/dog and feed your rooster leftovers to the cafe owners dog.

 

Crete was perfect. Four days of perfection. I will never forget the time spent there.

At the start of the week 7 of the City Of Culture 2017 I was thinking of taking it steady – stay at home, make my Slinkachu City Of Culture set  [read more about what is Slinkachu here: Slinkachu.com Street Installations and Photography] and watch BBC 2 Welcome to Hull presented by Hull-born comedian Lucy Beaumont.

But things turned out a bit different as the week progressed.

I started the Slinkachu, first testing the tiny people figures near The Blade  to see the scale and if I have the right lens to capture the installation.

It was fascinating to admit that I kind of feel like those tiny humans when I am near The Blade.

At home I designed City Of Culture 2017 branded flags, set up a rough idea of how I am going to work this crazy idea.

Work in progress, cos the figures are very tiny and I have to be sure that I know what I am doing before start super-glue them to the base.

On Friday I decided to visit the good old Hull School of Art&Design. It’s not only the place that changed my life, but funny enough – a spot on the City Of Culture 2017 map, hosting an exhibition in the downstairs area, plus an display of abstract architecture prints by imagesaremoments.

Sunday and the weather inspired me to get out and get cultured. I had three people with me, so we headed down Humber Street and Fruit Market.

Last time I had to miss out on Humber Street Gallery, cos the child and the content was not the mixture to go for.

First, on the ground floor I rushed to see Sarah Lucas Power in Woman display, mainly because of the combination of colours and capacity of the place/sculptures. And I was stopped by a volunteer, cos no photographs allowed.

Do I understand the cigarettes in the holes, do I understand why one of the sculpture was placed on a massive freezer…NO AND NO. But there was something about the roughness and boldness of these sculptures. It feels like they have been made by a man and is that the whole point?

Upstairs – COUM TRANSMISSIONS. The exhibition of materials drawn from the personal archives of Cosey Fanni Tutti and Genesis P-Orridge.

Founded in Hull during the late 1960s by artists Genesis P-Orridge and Cosey Fanni Tutti, COUM Transmissions was a collective whose work confronted, subverted and challenged societal conventions.

Labelled ‘the wreckers of civilisation’ by a Conservative MP following COUM’s Prostitution show at London’s Institute of Contemporary Arts, the group’s end in 1976 heralded the formation of the musical collective Throbbing Gristle.

For what I gathered  – COUM has been quite challenging for the society to understand and accept, but there it is many years later  – exhibited for people to apply another value to the work they did. Have we changed since the 1970’s?

I might have to get there another time, because I was unable to soak it in straight away.

People viewing the work certainly had something to discuss throughout and after.

 

Last but not least – Humber Street Gallery  top of the roof deck. AMAZING.

The location and the opportunity to have this view accessible is what Hull needed. And thank you for making my day. It was beautiful.

Overall I have to say that I am so happy to see that Humber Street and the Docks are buzzing, full of life and people are getting some sense of old and new binding together, creating today.

Every single thing has been thought out/about, even to the tiniest detail and are giving people an opportunity/reason to get out, get some fresh air, get to know Hull and most importantly – GET CULTURED, COS CITY OF CULTURE.

Dove House Colour Run 2016

Over the weekend I was involved in something pretty amazing and certainly different from everyday activities.

Dove House Hospice Colour Run took its place at Hymers College on Saturday. The event for the third year brought together fantastic people in urge to help and support Dove House Hospice.

The reason why I found myself covered in rainbow paint was my long-thought idea of running and photographing at the same time. I geared up with GoPro Hero, rather than carry the bulky Mark III, so I filmed as well as photographed. For the Colour Run I couldn’t really decide which way to go – run or photograph from the viewers point of view…and I think my decision to do both has got some success.

As just recently I have started volunteering for Dove House Hospice and start my End Of Life Celebrations project with them, I had the opportunity to bring the ideas forward to Fundraising team and they showed 100% support.

They loved the idea to have the Colour Run reflected from artists point of view within the actual run.

The GoPro Hero was an adorable little camera that took some shots from right of the middle of the action. I also filmed a lot whilst running, stopping for a close up action near the paint stations.

I have never used GoPro before and I wish I was. I have looked through the footage and the actual parts where I run are just…funny to say…a bit of a fail. Camera is jumping up and down with me and just doesn’t look right. But everything is a learning curve and I will master Adobe Pro and get a lovely short video from the footage I have.

Overall – really exciting event, brings different people together for one cause. The paint, sweat, water, smiles and fresh air literally made my day.

Hull Comedy Festival>>Sunday Funday @St.Stephens

As mentioned before Hull Comedy Festival 2016 is coming soon, so on Sunday they did a little promotion in St. Stephens as part of the Super Sunday Fundays they entertained kids and grownups too..

Must say – I got little too much involved and cheered alongside the kids to the magic tricks performed  by Michael Diamond’s.

Plus he had incredible skills in managing scary balloons….

Gary Jennison was there to make sure things are looking good, everyone gets involved and was blowing up HHCP balloons.. [oh might duck…]

Every now and then I feel the urge to attend a comedy gig hosted, presented and performed by my comedy friends.

Also Hull Comedy Festival 2016 is fast approaching and preparations are taking place more often.

Last Thursday I went down to Giggles Live Presents event at Kardomah94.

The event was hosted by famous and hilarious Jed Salisbury and performances from Jack Gleadow, Dave Rivers, Jack Hammer and Odd Sock Club, Gary Jennison Gameshow.

Well, I had a laugh an the audience did too [it was packed full and I could not find a seat]

These guys have so much talent, dedication and it is always my pleasure to be around them.

Erm, the photos are really just 1/2 professional as my aim was to enjoy myself.
